Założenia projektowe

Główne założenia kompozycyjne projektu to połączenie osi Nowego Światu i Alei Ujazdowskich oraz wyeksponowanie relacji przestrzennej kościoła św. Aleksandra i Trzech Krzyży. Założenie pozostają w zgodzie z wytycznymi Stołecznego Konserwatora Zabytków.
Do przebudowy Placu Trzech Krzyży podeszliśmy z pokorą wobec historycznego znaczenia tego ważnego zabytku urbanistyki. Uznaliśmy, że zredukujemy do minimum ingerencje kubaturowe w przestrzeń Placu. Głównym środkiem wyrazu naszego projektu jest gra posadzką. Ukazuje swoim rysunkiem kierunki historycznej osi. Posadzka jest wykonana z kostki granitowej. W swojej strukturze zawiera ciemniejsze kostki, ułożone w pasy łączące kierunki Nowego Światu i Alei Ujazdowskich. W układ kostek wkomponowane są elementy świecące (wg detali), które odchodzą od głównego szlaku w kierunku Krzyży i pomnika św. Jana Nepomucena. Jest to poboczna, lecz nie mniej ważna ścieżka prowadząca do zakątka zadumy i refleksji – przestrzeni między kościołem św. Aleksandra, a Krzyżami.

Układ funkcjonalny placu

Komunikację kołową zgrupowaliśmy po zachodniej stronie Placu, pozostawiając kościół św. Aleksandra oraz towarzyszące mu pomniki w strefie przeznaczonej jedynie dla ruchu pieszego. Ulica łącząca Nowy Świat i Aleje Ujazdowskie spełnia wymogi ulicy zbiorczej. Posiada 4 pasy ruchu, po 2 w każdą stronę. Towarzyszy jej ścieżka rowerowa, biegnąca już w strefie wyłączonej z ruchu samochodowego (w przestrzeni placu pieszego). Projekt zakłada zgrupowanie sieci wodociągowej i przeniesienie jej pod w/w ulicę po to by zwolnić miejsce na garaż podziemny. W wypadku rezygnacji z jego budowy w przyszłości, sieć wodociągowa nie wymaga ingerencji. Dlatego koszt przeniesienia sieci wliczony jest w cenę budowy parkingu.

Układ komunikacyjny

Główną decyzją komunikacyjną było przeniesienie ruchu kołowego na zachodnią stronę Placu Trzech Krzyży. Układ ten nie jest utrudnieniem dla osób poruszających się samochodem, jednak naszym priorytetem było stworzenie atrakcyjnej przestrzeni publicznej. Wynikiem faworyzowania ruchu kołowego jest obecny stan Placu. Wschodnia strona, wraz z kościołem św. Aleksandra, Instytutem Głuchoniemych, usługami w parterach budynków tzw. Holland Parku i hotelem Sheraton połączona placem dla pieszych podkreśla prawdziwie miejski charakter Placu Trzech Krzyży.
Północna ściana Placu z lokalami gastronomicznymi i sklepami generuje aktywność komercyjną. Jako strefę przejściową między nią, a Kościołem proponujemy plamę zieleni w posadzce Placu. Odbyło się to kosztem przesunięcia fragmentu ulicy między ul. Książęcą i Żurawią. Relacje ruchu kołowego pozostają bez zmian.

Garaż podziemny

Lokalizacja 3-poziomowego parkingu podziemnego nie narusza obecnego przebiegu sieci ciepłowniczych. Nie koliduje także z nowo projektowaną ulicą zbiorczą. Wymagać będzie jednak przebudowy części instalacji wodociągowej i zgrupowania jej pod w/w ulicą. Zaplecze sanitarne Placu zlokalizowane jest w garażu podziemnym. Znajdują się tam ogólnodostępne toalety miejskie.

Zieleń

Zgodnie z wytycznymi zawartymi w Inwentaryzacji Zieleni zachowujemy roślinność o wysokiej i średnio wysokiej wartości. Plac Trzech Krzyży jest obecnie ubogi w zieleń, dlatego proponujemy w projekcie nowe nasadzenia w okolicy Ministerstwa Handlu oraz od północnej strony kościoła św. Aleksandra. Mają to być drzewa o wysokości do ok. 7 metrów. Przeważający gatunek to Klon Pospolity Globuzum o kulistym pokroju korony. Jako zieleń niską proponujemy krzewy Róży Krzaczastej.

Oświetlenie

Przebudowa Placu Trzech Krzyży ma na celu ekspozycję zabytków również po zmroku. Wymaga tego szczególnie kościół św. Aleksandra, który nie iluminuje tak jak okoliczne kamienice rozświetlone od wewnątrz. Również wschodnia ściana gmachu Ministerstwa Handlu jest dodatkowo podświetlona reflektorami halogenowymi.
Poza oświetleniem budynków, projekt zakłada iluminację posadzki w celu wyznaczenia istotnych kierunków i podkreślenia najważniejszych obszarów Placu. Elementy świecące zaprojektowaliśmy, jako integralną część posadzki. Wzór utworzony z ich ułożenia tworzy rodzaj odgałęzienia od głównego kierunku posadzki i prowadzi w stronę Krzyży i pomnika św. Jana Nepomucena.
Zabytkowe latarnie, tzw. Pastorałki, zostały użyte do oświetlenia ulicy zbiorczej przebiegającej przez Plac. Stanowi to kontynuację ich ciągu wzdłuż Alei Ujazdowskich.

Posadzka Placu

Nawierzchnia Placu składa się z 3 głównych rodzajów posadzki: Kostka granitowa oraz trawa w części pieszej i asfaltowe drogi komunikacji kołowej. Największą powierzchnię ma posadzka granitowa. Nawiązuje do historycznego bruku, jest wysoce odporna na ścieranie oraz złamania poszczególnych elementów, co jest ważne przy skomplikowanym sposobie etapowania prac nad odbudową Placu Trzech Krzyży.

Mała architektura.

Jedynym miejscem lokalizacji małej architektury jest przestrzeń przed Instytutem Głuchoniemych. Są to niewielkich gabarytów pawilony, stanowiące połączenie z garażem podziemnym. Jest tu też miejsce na wywieszenie tymczasowej wystawy czy lokalizację punktu informacyjnego. Są to szklane kubiki wysokości 4 metrów, maksymalnie neutralne wobec zabytkowej przestrzeni Placu. Po zmroku stanowią rodzaj swoistych latarni oświetlających Instytut.

Wyposażenie Placu – „meble miejskie”

Zgodnie z zaleceniami Organizatora konkursu, wprowadzamy na Plac latarnie „pastorałki”. Dodatkowo, podkreślając detalami urbanistycznymi powiązania z Nowym Światem, stosujemy identyczne przystanki autobusowe, siedziska, stojaki rowerowe oraz śmietniki. Spójność wyposażenia tych przestrzeni przyczyni się do lepszego odbioru Placu jako kontynuacji Nowego Światu i Alei Ujazdowskich.

Etapowanie prac

W pierwszej kolejności zostanie usunięta w kilku etapach obecna posadzka Placu. W wypadku decyzji o przyszłej budowie garażu podziemnego zalecane jest wcześniejsze zgrupowanie sieci wodociągowej pod projektowaną ulicą zbiorczą. Nie koliduje ona z położeniem garażu. Następnie ułożona zostanie docelowa posadzka z kostki granitowej, którą na ewentualność późniejszych robót można tymczasowo zdjąć. Uważamy, że stosowanie tymczasowej posadzki jest niekorzystne gdyż niesie za sobą ryzyko jej pozostawienia na dłuższy czas oraz większe koszty całości inwestycji. Docelową posadzkę dobraliśmy kierując się jej wysoką jakością i możliwością demontażu na czas prac budowlanych bez ryzyka jej uszkodzenia.

A project of an art gallery for an international architectual competition in Maribor - Slovenia (EPK Drava River 2012). Designed equally with Jakub Piotr Kalinowski, Piotr Kus, Krzysztof Rewski.

Description:

Urban arrangement

There are two plots given for the project – Study Area “A” Architectural Design and Study Area “B” Urban Layout. One of the main design goals was to make them harmonize with each other. That’s why we thought about relationship between the new volumes, taking into consideration both design areas. There are 2 buildings on Study Area “B” – hotel and apartments. Both are four stories high.

Hotel’s location can ensure its high standard. It can be a good supplement for just four residential apartments in UGM’s program. Neighboring Street E is a public promenade and it raises the attractiveness of the hotel.

Apartment quarter creates a continuation of Koroska Cesta street’s frontage which currently has a gap. Apartment building has a U-shaped plan, open towards south direction.

Architectural idea

During the design process, we came across many doubts about the future architectural expression of the new spatial addition in the existing context. The given functional programme made it clear that the new building has to be out of nearby architectural scale. Even though, we decided to make it as neutral as possible.

Simple orthogonal forms and homogeneous, bright hue of the facade makes this building an obvious novelty in it’s architectural environment. Barely clad in detail, it becomes a background for valuable historic context and becomes a symbol itself being one of a kind in it’s surrounding.

We wanted to keep buildings on both sides of street E separate, without any passages above it. This would be inappropriate form in urban fabric of Maribor. We also tried to make the gallery as compact as possible to avoid disharmony in the city outline visible from the river. This idea combined with rich functional program and it’s requirements (like the height of exhibition rooms reaching 12 m) resulted in using the whole available underground area within the boundaries of the plot. We also tried to make the buildings look smaller than they really are. Big scale of exterior walls perforation compared with the size of the building subconsciously suggests that it is smaller.

Social impact

One of the main reasons for choosing this plot for the New UGM was a desire to revaluate an important place close to the historic town centre. The project fulfils this task both on aesthetic and social fields. Street E is a public space melting into the building’s City Living Room, which covers eastern part of Level 0 and an independently open strip on southern side of Level -1. This is where the catering area is located. It attracts people walking along the river bank. This longitudinal passage is also organized as an extra temporary exhibition space for pieces of art which are resistant to direct sunlight.

Inviting nature of ground level of the building along with every-day program like restaurant, club, shops and internet point makes it attractive to a broad audience. Even people who aren’t keen on experiencing art so much would find this place interesting. Once they are there, it’s easier to tempt them inside the actual exhibition.

Sustainability

2 year’s completion time of the project on such scale requires paying big attention to the costs and the level of difficulty in building process. That’s why we are proposing mainly low-tech ecological solutions. They cost less and are more reliable than highly complicated systems, which are not only expensive but very often actually harmful to the environment. F.eg. producing solar panels takes more energy and generates more CO2 than heating a building with gas instead. We wanted New UGM to be an example showing that inexpensive and simple solutions can very helpful in reducing building’s impact on natural environment and it’s maintenance costs like energy consumption and restoration.

We focused on following sustainable solutions:

- Maximum use of local materials (gravel, sand etc.) to minimize transportation costs and pollution.

- Low embodied energy value of used building materials (f.eg. no aluminum or copper panels)

- Cellulose thermal insulation is made 85% from recycled paper. It’s not only environmental friendly but also very healthy.

- Simple geometry of the buildings reduces the area of exterior walls. Cooling or overheating surface is minimized. Very low A/V = 0.12 m-1 factor. Explanation and calculations below.

- Heat exchange system uses ground / water based probes to minimize the amount of energy for heating or cooling the building. High level of underground water is an advantage in this case.

- 2 water reservoirs 2x2x0,5 m which provide extra water for technical needs like flushing the toilets. They are located on top of communication/installation cores (they are heavily constructed anyway so there’s no need for strengthening the structure)

- Eco-education and promoting sustainable means of transportation. Apart from parking garage for cars, we designed secure bicycle stands along street E.

A/V Factor explanation and calculation.

A/V Factor (area vs. volume) describes density of a solid. Smaller factor means that solid is more compact. It also means that there is less area for heat loss or overheating. Typically, A/V factor ranges from 0.25 to 1.0 [m-1] depending on a size and shape of the building. We took the advantage of the big scale of the building and we made it as compact as possible (upper terrace is the only “extravagance” within this concept). Thanks to that we achieved A/V factor = 0.12 m-1 in the main building of UGM.

Input data:

A stands for area of exterior walls (including glazing) and roof.

V is building’s gross volume.

Gross values:

a = 66.70 m – length of the building

b = 49.50 m – width of the building

c = 22.50 m – average height of the building

d = 12.75 m – length of terrace

e = 16.85 width of terrace

f = 6.40 height of terrace wall

Formula:

V = (a*b*c) – (d*e*f) [m3]

A = (2*a*c) + (2*b*c) + (a*b) /bottom area is not taken into consideration/

Calculation and outcome:

V = (66.77*49.50*22.50) – (12.75*16.85*6.40) = 72912.16 [m3]

A = (2*66.70*22.50) + (2*49.50*22.5) + (66.70*49.50) = 8530.65 [m2]

A/V = 8530.65/72912.16 = 0.12 [m-1]

Economical balance

One of requirements given by the competition curator is good economical balance and flexibility of New UGM. The whole building is based on a common 8,1x8,1m structure grid. It’s constructed in monolithic concrete technology, which is inexpensive, reliable and easy to build. It’s also very universal. It’s used in various types of buildings from housing to offices. That’s why it’s easy to rearrange the interior of the building if it’s needed in the future. It is also open for smaller changes like re-designing the divisions of exhibition space.

Sustainability o the building also results in low maintenance costs. As they are mainly low-tech, they don’t generate extra costs during the building process. You can find more information about that in Sustainability chapter of this booklet.

Functional interactions / flexibility

We inserted the whole program in 2 buildings as we wanted to keep Street E clear. They are connected underground.

Main functions are located in the big gallery building. It contains public program on River level: catering, library, workshops which can be accessible independently from opening hours of the gallery. These functions are also accessible from the main hall and the City’s Living Room which are located next to Street E and the children’s playground. The upper levels of UGM building is organized as exhibition space with its supplementary program. Offices and lecture room are located on top. One of the main reasons to do it this way was an intention to make a big structural span in the lecture room so its space is clear, without any columns. It was only possible on top floor (if you keep in mind the rational investment costs)

The smaller building is also functionally divided in appropriate levels. Ground level is reserved for semi-public multipurpose rooms and Children’s Museum. It has to be safe and well connected with its playground. Next two levels are occupied with Creative Industry Centre and Architectural Centre. Top floor is designed as apartments. They are well exposed to the sunlight and have roof terrace.

Flexibility

Like mentioned in Economical balance chapter, the building is based on 8.1x8.1 m structure grid. The whole plan around the communication cores is free from constructional walls. There are only columns. Horizontal rigidity is ensured by the cores in the middle of the plan and exterior reinforced concrete walls. This means that nearly all of inside walls can be rearranged or even removed.

Project description:

1. Retail vs. public spaces. Urban /social influence of the design. The main goal during the design process of this building was to create public space using innovative way of creating retail areas. Passage on the ground floor is always open and can act like a small “inner” street. There are two green areas closing it from both sides creating a kind of oasis next to noisy Vali Asr Street. The social problem of modern retail spaces is that customers are just anonymous strangers who never talk to each other. How noisy and full of life the old markets were and how silent and dull modern shops often are? This project has an ambition to change it. The passage idea, already mentioned is nothing new. But the way of shopping is. It forces customers to think about other people in the shop. There is a big slide fixed to the ceiling. Clothes are hanging on it. If you want to see some item you have to move also some other clothes to get yours. This could cause inconvenience to the others. If you want to avoid it, you have to negotiate with other customers interested in this group of items how you can move all the clothes not to disturb them.

2. Architecture /form. Form of the building follows two factors: a) reminiscence of ziggurat, which was one of the earliest forms on this land. b) functional requirements of the program Factor a), like the social goal of retail area, is corresponding with the historic context of this place.

3. Architecture /detail. Façade is covered with engraved aluminum panels. It protects the interior from overheating and creates a decorative, complex shade inside the building. Pattern on the elevation corresponds with Persian decoration. On office and apartment floors window shutters are also made of these panels so the façade stays homogeneous in its design.

4. Circulation for different functions within the building. Core in the middle of the building is responsible for vertical routing. There are 4 groups of elevators covering the needs of different users and one common fire evacuation staircase.
Elevator 1 – public use. It is placed between hall on the ground floor and level1.
Elevator 2 – technical lift between storage rooms.
Elevator 3 – apartment use.
Elevator 4 – office use. There are two elevators to cover 5 office floors.

Project for Svarovski Active Crystals and Designboom competition 2008

While thinking about future jewelry it is good to look beyond its forms. These change constantly and depend on many factors.
Most wanted jewelry was always made of diamonds because they reflect the light in a very fragile and complex way. This brings magic ‘light cloud’ around the properly cut diamond. This sort of glam cocoon makes crystal jewelry so femine and delicate.
Lead crystals like Swarovski have refractive indexes and dispersion much lower than genuine diamonds. This is one of the main reasons why they can compete with them only in the economical field at the moment.
Active Crystals idea is combining electronics with crystals. So far it is crystal ornamentation added to electronic products to make them more elegant. Why not do it the other way around and make crystals better using electronics? High-tech can be used to strengthen the artificial diamond’s reflections. Holographic projections can simulate the cloud of random reflections around the crystal. Their strength and pattern would depend on surrounding light and movement for best simulation. Electric energy can be supplied with movement, like in automatic watches.

Prostota zasady konstrukcyjnej, łatwość pakowania, dobre właściwości termiczne materiału, niska masa i cena powodują, że może być konkurencją dla obecnych obecnie na rynku bud. 4 podstawowe rozmiary zostały opracowane w oparciu o studium budowy psiego ciała. Dog house design. The concept is based on joining two slabs of net PE foam, creating a floor and an arch canopy. The simplicity of if, easy packaging, good thermal insulation, low weight and price can make this project an good product. For details, see the images below. 3 artykuły o programie lotniska Schiphol pod Amsterdamem, które rozrasta się do rozmiarów miasta. Główne omawiane problemy to:
-struktura ludności przebywającej na terenie Schiphol;
-"prawdziwość" tego pseudo-miasta;
-kwestia imigrantów, którzy nie zostali przyjęci do kraju i przebywają w tymczasowych obozach;
-systemy bezpieczeństwa.
Praca powstała podczas mojego pobytu w Niderlandach w 2007/2008 r. Tekst dostępny jedynie w języku angielskim. W celu przeczytania artykułów należy otwierać załączone niżej obrazki.

Research on Schiphol airport city which is becoming a big issue in the Netherlands in the past years. It's slowly loosing its leadership in being a major hub in Europe. What are the alternative ways to keep it developing? I participated in this collective research while studying at Academie van Bouwkunst in Rotterdam in 2007/2008. The part I wrote is about Shiphol's programme. Main topics:

Graficzna analiza ukazująca związek muzyki i archtektury. Górna część arkusza ukazuje emocjonalny rozkład utworu muzycznego w zestawieniu z jego widmem częstotliwości. Utwór (Bert Kaempfert - Mambo Mania) jest podzielony na powtarzalne moduły umieszczone na osi czasu oraz na różnych wysokościach. Dolna części to analiza obiektu architektonicznego (Oscar Niemeyer - sul america hospital) wykonana na podobnej zasadzie. Celem tej pracy było poszukiwanie powiązań architektury z muzyką. Graphic artwork showing the emotional analysys of music's influence on architecture. The top part is an attempt to show a piece of music using a matrix of modular elements (rhythm) and wavy shapes (melody) put together in time, on different levels. The next step was to find an appropriate building to match the composition of Mambo. Sul america hospital by Oscar Niemeyer seemed to be the right choice. It has been analyzed using a similar graphic method. The whole idea of this project was to realize how much music and architecture have in common. Co-author: Jakub Kalinowski
